the gunners of arsenal were eliminated from the uefa champions league tournament today. arsenal fell to liverpool 4-2, and will not be heading to the semifinals. this is no doubt a disappointing finish, as a fellow premiereship team eliminated the gunners.

i recently made a couple moves to my keeper league team this afternoon. i added scot shields and eugenio velez, and cut jack cust and jerry owens. francisco rodriguez has a couple bad ankles and was taken out of the game last nite. hopefully shields is in line to pick up a couple save opportunities. as for velez, he is a speedster second baseman for san francisco who i am hoping gets regular at bats. velez could provide some help with stolen bases. jack cust is just not a very good hitter, and doesnt get regular at bats. while his power is nice, waiting for him to actually hit a ball can be nervewracking. i let go of jerry owens because he is on the DL, and the emergence of carlos quentin in the white sox outfield. chicago traded for quentin, and the GM has been saying owens will have to be reevaluated when he eventually gets healthy. with owens future in jeopardy, i am trying to snag some cheap steals and saves. we will see how it turns out.

mets bullpen

the bullpen blew a 2 run lead, and the mets lost to the phillies in the home opener. jose reyes went 1-5, and is still slumping. oliver perez had a decent outing today, but 2 runs wasnt enough to hold off the phillies. shortstop jimmy rollins left the game with an ankle injury. on a positive note, carlos delgado hit a homerun, and carlos beltran hit another double. both players are hitting the ball hard, and beltran is looking to hit his first homerun of the year. the mets face the phillies tomorrow nite at 7.

exciting afternoon matchup today with the phillies visiting the mets. the home opener for the last season at shea stadium should be a tough series. the mets hope to get solid pitching, and also hope jose reyes can break out of his slump. i believe both pitching rotations are at or near the bottom. hopefully the mets bats can get going, and put a hurting on those phillies that stole the division the last year.

kansas

kansas wins national championship. chalmers is most outstanding player. kansas really proved they were the best team tonite. the game went in swings. kansas hung around at the end, and the demise of memphis was missed free throws. kansas beat unc with no problem, and then put away memphis. congrats to bill self and kansas tonite.

fantasy update

so far my fantasy baseball teams suck. i am either in the middle of the pack, or the bottom in all 4 of my leagues. players like adam dunn, price fielder, miguel cabrera, and jose reyes are all boning me right now. reyes is the one i am most worried about, as he was my first pick in the league i want to win the most. i had the sixth pick in this draft with all my boys from home. reyes is considered almost a steal at the 6 spot. he finished slumping last year, and started this year off the same way. adam dunn has looked pretty awful so far. cabrera has yet to settle in the detroit lineup. fielder i am not really griping about as much as the other three. fielder is hitting the ball and driving in runs. he has yet to go deep though. my league with my boys from home i am in the middle of the pack, and looking to rebound this week with 4 two start pitchers. a keeper league that i am in with a bunch of guys from penn state is starting horribly. currently in ninth out of eleven. i kept as franchise players: ichiro, ryan braun, and carlos beltran. rookie keepers were ian kennedy and clayton kershaw. i am pumped about kershaw, and hope he lives up to some of the hype this year. the other leagues i am in were simply online leagues where i know no one. the $30 it cost to get in is the only real motivation to win. i really want win the other two leagues. my keeper league will be the most difficult to win because it is so deep. i mean i had kershaw on my team last year. if i can get some quality starts in sundowner (keeper league) i should be able to have a decent week. as for lets have fun (boys from home league) i need dunn, reyes, and fielder to have breakout weeks, along with some good pitching with my two start pitchers. heres to rebounding this week.

this has been bugging me for more than a year now. in baseball highlights on sportscenter or baseball tonite, why dont they put stolen bases in the stat line? i dont understand that at all. steals are an important stat, just as important as the other 4 offensive categories anyway.

ncaa championship

tomorrow nights ncaa championship game should be a tightly played contest with outstanding guard play. memphis’ freshman derrick rose has been nothing short of unstoppable in the tournament. kansas has 4 very quick, and talented guards as well. against carolina, kansas looked to have outstanding team speed. their guards were everywhere on the floor, and rebounded well. i dont think kansas will look to run with memphis, but at times will be able to hold their own. overall though, i believe memphis simply has the most talented team. they have four nba prospects on their roster right now. calipari is an experienced coach, and will be winning his first ncaa title.

waiver wire week 2

this weeks waiver wire will no doubt be lit up this weekend. jonny cueto and edinson volquez of the cincinnati reds pitched like veterans, racking up more than a strikeout an inning. justin upton, a promising outfielder from arizona, ht a homerun three games in a row. the milwaukee brewers had two solid outings from carlos villanueva and manny parra. it looks like they are both pitching for their spot in the rotation with yovani gallardo set to come back in a couple weeks. jeff keppinger had a nice weekend as well. keppinger is fighting for his infield spot with alex gonzalez scheduled to be back in a couple of weeks as well. nate mclouth, an outfielder for the pirates, is off to a nice start this spring. matthew berry of espn has mclouth as a lock for 20 homeruns and 20 stolen bases. that may be a little ambitious, but he looks like a real player. someone i am anxious to see pitch their second start is randy wolf from san diego. wolf was hurt for most of the second half last year pitching for the dodgers. he is a veteran pitcher, who seems put up decent numbers when healthy. i picked him up as a solid number 7 or 8 starter. another pitcher who may be available in most leagues will be micah owings from the arizona diamondbacks. his numbers improved through the secnd half last year, and is off to a hot start striking out nine in six innings. finally the most notable cut i made this week, was cutting ian kennedy to sign justin upton. i dont like cutting kennedy but he is totally unproven, not unlike upton. but the adjustments for a hitter usually come quicker than for pitchers. both prospects are very raw, with tons of upside. we will see how that pans out for me. one last thing, pick up clayton kershaw if you have room to stash someone for a month or two. kid is nasty.

detroit tigers

how bad are the detroit tigers right now? it really looks like the tigers simply dont know how to win a game. they havent put together one solid performance as a team. they have some problems in the bullpen until they get zumaya and rodney back. rest assure though, if anyone can get this team back on track, its jim leyland. things are a mess right now in that clubhouse though.
